Na konci minulého století přišel na Západ prostý indický mnich a měl mnoho přednášek o vedantské filozofii Indie a různých systémech jógy, které udělaly velký dojem na Ameriku, Anglii a další evropské země. Tento mnich se jmenoval Swami Vivekananda. Bylo to poprvé, co široká veřejnost na Západě měla možnost nahlédnout do učení velkých indických rišijů a jogínů. Přednášky, které Vivekananda měl, vzbudily všude velký zájem a široké okruhy lidí na Západě se začaly věnovat pokladům východní moudrosti a jógy. Od té doby tento zájem neustále roste, neboť druhá světová válka smetla všechny staré iluze a falešné představy, na kterých bylo založeno sebevědomí národů Západu. Západní lidé ztratili svou víru a s ní i vnitřní klid, které ve skutečnosti nikdy neměli. Nebezpečí nové války a hrozivá destrukce, kterou by mohl způsobit atomový konflikt, stále číhají v pozadí dnešního života a nutí lidi na Západě, zmítané úzkostí, hledat nový a pevnější základ, na kterém by mohli znovu postavit svou víru. Příklad vnitřního klidu, nebojácnosti a sebevědomí nastolený východními lidmi obrátil pozornost západních lidí k Východu. Zdroj totoho vnitřního míru je východní moudrost a různé systémy jógy, které umožňují východnímu člověku vytvořit si železnou sebekázeň a udržet si vždy vládu sám nad sebou. Jóga umožňuje člověku získat silné vedení nad svou vůlí a schopností odolávat, umožňuje mu snášet existeční boje dnešní doby a ovládat každý tah osudu s nezlomnou duší a tím si udržet neochvějný klid a dobré zdraví. Velcí indičtí mistři předali své učení svým žákům a v průběhu tisíců let vznikly různé systémy jógy přizpůsobené předpokladům a schopnostem daných lidí. Tyto systémy mohou být použity jak lidmi z Východu tak ze Západu, neboť lidská anatomie je všude stejná. A tak začal Západ cvičit jógu. Neustále rostoucí zájem Západu o jógu nás přiměl k tomu, že jsme založili několik škol jógy v západních zemích, napsali mnoho knih o józe a měli nespočetně přednášek o ní. Některé z těchto přednášek teď na žádost veřejnosti vydáváme v knižní podobě. Doufáme, že starověká moudrost indických jogínů a rišijů v této knize rozžehne zájem seznámit se blíže s jógou u tolika lidí, u kolika tak učinily naše přednášky. Budeme velmi spokojeni, pokud touto knihou budeme moct ukázat cestu několika hledajícím a předvést jim, jak si udržet východní klid za všech okolností, jak zvítězit nad existečními boji dnešní doby, jak si podrobit svůj vlastní osud a jak v těchto všech bitvách zůstat vždy šťastný a zdravý. Tento zvláštní jazyk je pravěký jazyk nejen proto, že naši předci jím mluvili před nespočtem věků, ale také proto, že ukazuje spíš příčiny než důsledky. A protože na naší hmotné úrovni, ve světě projevů, může mít jedna jediná příčina nesčetně odlišných důsledků, každý výraz sanskrtu má mnoho odlišných významů tak, jako má daná příčina důsledků. Například sanskrtské slovo „karma“ znamená „osobnost“, „charakter“ a také „čin“, „skutek“ nebo také „osud“; neboť stejná příčina, která vtiskne člověku jeho charakter, způsobí také jeho skutky a ty se pak němu vrátí zpět a jsou jeho osudem. Takto toto jediné sanskrtské slovo vyjadřuje hlubokou pravdu, že osobnost jako taková vytváří svůj vlastní osud skrze své skutky. Proto je osud vždy věrným odrazem osobnosti. Na nejvyšší úrovni vývoje, zde na Zemi, stojí člověk. Jeho vyvinutý rozum, jeho schopnost myslet a jeho řeč jakožto přímý projev jeho schopnosti myslet, ho postavili do popředí před všechny živé bytosti. Ale k porozumění lidské osobnosti či charakteru nestačí pouze naslouchat lidské řeči. Jazyk je meč s dvojím ostřím. Na jedné straně slouží pravdě; na té druhé lži. Co člověk říká, může být buď pravda nebo lež. Zkouška charakteru spočívá vždy ve skutku! Mluvit bez činu je prázdné. Na druhou stranu činy nepotřebují slova, aby odkryly charakter nebo osobnost člověka. Vezměme si jako příklad zvířata. Zvíře neumí mluvit a přesto můžete poznat jeho charakter stejným způsobem, jakým to můžete udělat u lidské bytosti. Každý druh zvířete má určité zvláštní vlastnosti, každý poddruh je také odlišný od všech ostatních a dokonce každé jednotlivé zvíře má jedinečnou řadu svých charakterových vlastností. Bráno z pohledu druhů, psy a kočky jsou velmi odlišní charakterem. Ale i v rámci psí rodiny můžeme najít ohromné rozdíly mezi jednotlivými plemeny. Vezměne si například vlčáka, jezevčíka, pudla a buldoka. Poctivou povahu vlčáka bychom těžko hledali u mazaného a hravého jezevčíka. A pudl se svými bleskurychlými reakcemi a přizpůsobivostí je na hony vzdálený agresivnímu odhodlanému buldokovi. Pokud půjdeme ještě dál a srovnáme dva psy téže rasy, zjistíme, že jsou i tak velmi odlišní. Každý majitel psa ví, že už nikdy nebude žít právě takový pes, jako je ten jeho. Takže vidíme, že každé zvíře, každá živá bytost má naprosto individuální charakter, jedinečný a zcela odlišný od každé jiné živé bytosti. Charakter je nezávislý na rozumu a řeči. Člověk, který umí mluvit, a zvíře, které neumí, mají oba povahu a osobnost. Rozdíl je v tom, že zvíře si není vědomé sebe sama, nemůže se poznat, zatímco člověk se svým vysoce vyvinutým rozumem je schopný přemýšlet sám o sobě a svých vlastnostech, poznat a pochopit svůj charakter a být soudcem sebe sama. Tato schopnost mu umožňuje stát se pánem sebe samého a získat vládu nad svým osudem. Člověk jako jednotlivec může pozorovat jak sám sebe tak i ostatní, svůj život a životy druhých a tímto způsobem může srovnávat sám sebe s ostatními ve vztahu k osudu. Při tomto srovnávání si všimne překvapivé zákonitosti a sice, že lidé, kteří jsou si podobní, mají podobné osudy. Jak pokračuje ve svém pozorování, uvědomí si, že příčinou cestiček svého osudu je sám člověk, a pomaličku začne objevovat tajemství neviditelných vazeb a propojení. Objeví pravdu, kterou moudří lidé Východu nazývají zákonem karmy. Jednoduše řečeno tento zákon zní „jaký charakter, takový osud“. Hnací síla osudu je člověk sám a pokud chce změnit svůj osud, musí nejdřív změnit svůj charakter. Člověk, který je otrokem své nízké povahy, svého instinktu, bude také otrokem svého osudu. Pokud se člověk slepě odevzdá přírodním silám, kterém v něm působí, jeho osud s ním stejně slepě bude pohazovat sem a tam. Ale pokud člověk pozná tajemnou hnací sílu svého osudu, jeho cesta ke svobodě se otevře. Kdokoliv zvítězí sám nad sebou, zvítězí nad svým osudem! Jen člověk, který si je vědomý toho, co dělá, toho může dosáhnout. Aby se dostal na tuto úroveň, musí urazit dlouhou cestu vedoucí od primitivní úrovně pudů, na které není nic jiného než zvíře, které má rozum, až na úroveň, ve které se z něho stala vědomá a vysoce vyvinutá lidská bytost. Primitivnímu člověku trvalo tisíce let vývoje, aby se dostal na tak vysokou úroveň, že může vědomě používat svůj rozum. Ale jeho celá bytost byla stále naplněná dvěma silnými přírodními pudy – pudem sebezáchovy a rozmnožování. A tak dal svůj rozum do služeb těchto pudů, aby pomocí svých schopností uspokojil svoje smyslné touhy a zpříjemnil si život. Když člověk něco chce, napětí jeho vůle vytvoří myšlenky v jeho mozku a ty ho přimějí k činu. Ale nemůžeme udělat nic, abychom zároveň nespustili řetěz událostí. Nemůžeme vyslovit ani jediné slovo či udělat gesto, aniž bychom nedali vzniknout následkům. A i po tom, co jsme už dávno zapomněli na svůj čin, který spustil retěz událostí, vlny v čase a prostoru stále proudí a způsobují nové činy dál a dál do nekonečna, až do úplné věčnosti. Když hodíme kámen do klidného rybníku, uvedeme do pohybu vlnky, které běží od místa vhození v neustále se rozšiřujícím kruhu. A tyto vlnky zůstanou v pohybu i dlouho po tom, co se již kámen dotkl dna. Podobným způsobem proudí směrem od nás na všechny strany následky našich činů a vytvářejí tak nekonečný řetězec, dokud se nevrátí zpátky k nám v podobě toho, co nazýváme štěstí a osud. Většinou si ovšem nejsme schopni vzpomenout, jaký čin způsobil ten či onen zásah osudu. Jen jedna věc je jistá: výsledek, který se nám vrátí, bude naprosto stejného druhu jako byl náš počáteční skutek. Tento samý zákon působí všude! Pokud udeřím pěstí do stolu, stůl, aniž by se pohnul, udeří stejně prudce do mé ruky. Rána, kterou moje ruka dostane od stolu, byla způsobená ranou, kterou jsem dal stolu. Stejný zákon působí na náš osud: Pokud ostatním způsobím bolest svým sobeckým jednáním, můžu si být jistý, že obdržím stejně bolestný úder. Pokud jsou mé skutky stědré, osud bude stejně stědrý ke mně a poskytne mi dary tehdy, kdy to budu nejmíň očekávat. Ignorantský omezený člověk, jehož životní náplní je jen uspokojení jeho pudů, je sobecký ve svém myšlení a chování a právě kvůli tomuto nedostatku soucitu od sebe odpuzuje lidi kolem sebe a tak sám sebe izoluje. Proto je zcela přirozené, že jeho osud se k němu chová naprosto stejným způsobem. Sobeckost, kterou vyzařuje, naplňuje atmosféru kolem něj energiemi, jejichž reciproční důsledky mu přinášejí bolest a utrpení. Jeho trápení ho pak tak dlouho sužuje, znovu a znovu, dokud ho jeho vlastní pud sebezáchovy nepřinutí hledat úlevu a svobodu od svého utrpení. Bohužel však v tomto stádiu dělají lidé jednu chybu za druhou tím, že skoro vždy hledají svobodu všude možně, jen ne na tom jediném místě, kde jí opravdu mohou nalézt – sami v sobě. Místo toho si stěžují na „okolnosti“ a snaží se je změnit. Výsledkem je vždy neúspěch a oni se, díky svému špatně nasměrovanému úsilí, znovu stávají oběťmi nového utrpení a bolesti, dokud si konečně neuvědomí, že oni sami byli celou dobu hnací silou svého osudu. Proto nejdříve musíme změnit sami sebe, aby se mohl změnit svět kolem nás. Dokud se snažíme změnit svět, aniž bychom změnili sebe sama, veškerá naše snaha je marná. Utrpení nicméně probouzí nejen naši touhu po svobodě, ale také soucit vůči ostatním. Vlastní zkušeností zjistíme, co utrpení vlastně je, a tak se naučíme rozumět utrpení druhých. Tímto způsobem se rodí porozumění. A to je první krok směrem k nesobeckosti! Pak jde život dál. Dál trochu trpíme a sbíráme další zkušenosti. Krůček po krůčku, naplněni touhou po osvobození, si znovu a znovu všímáme, jak tyto principy života působí, a začínáme si uvědomovat vztah mezi příčinou a následkem: dobré přináší dobré a zlé přináší zlé. Hřích je už trest sám o sobě. Společně s naším rostoucím chápáním a porozuměním, se začne rozšiřovat a prohlubovat naše schopnost cítit soucit vůči svým bližním; stále víc vycházejí naše záměry z pochopení, dokud se naše srdce neohřeje natolik, že se zrodí láska. Ale nemluvíme o lásce, jak si ji mnozí lidé vykládají. Lidé si myslí, že mluví o lásce, když popisují pocit, který zažívají, jsou-li s osobou, jejíž přítomnost je obšťastňuje a kterou chtějí vlastnit. Pod záminkou „lásky“ terorizují své blízké, zbavují je jejich svobody a práva na sebeurčení a očekávají, že se z nich stanou poslušní roboti. Takoví lidé nejsou schopni rozpoznat, co je opravdu příjemné pro jejich blízké, které údajně milují. Naopak, přesvědčeni, že jsou motivováni „čistou láskou“, nutí své blízké, aby vykonávali jejich vůli. Jak často vídáme rodiče, kteří tvrdí, že žijí pouze pro své děti, a muže a ženy, kteří tvrdí, že žijí jen jeden pro druhého. Zaměříme-li se ale na tyto lidi víc zblízka, ukáže se, že opak je pravdou. Ve skutečnosti tito lidé očekávají, že druzí budou žít pro ně. Nikdy je nenapadne, že ti druzí jsou také samostatné bytosti a mají svůj vlastní život. Nedochází jim, že tito „drazí blízcí“ lidé možná chtějí nebo potřebují úplně něco jiného, než jim oni doporučují a předepisují. Takoví lidé se často rozčílí, když mluví o svých „nevděčných dětech“ nebo o jiných lidech a jejich „nedostatku pochopení“, neboť ti, které oni tvrdí, že tak „milují“, před nimi často prchají. Co jim uchází je, že vždycky požadovali, ale nikdy sami nedali pochopení, lásku a vděčnost. Lidé motivovaní opravdovou láskou, která je založená na pochopení, budou svým osudem vždy štědře odměněni. Mějme vždy na paměti, že síly, které vyzařujeme, se k nám vracejí. Jak zaseješ, tak sklidíš. Když lidé, kteří ovlivňují náš osud, na nás myslí – ať už v dobrém nebo špatném – a pak podle toho konají, odráží se v tom zase jen ty síly, které jsme my sami vyslali a které se přemění v činy, jež určují náš osud. Myšlenky se nestávají realitou samy od sebe. Je to tak, že neviditelné síly a energie způsobují, že klíčí a rostou. Někdy stačí jenom trochu dobré vůle, kterou jsme projevili možná před dlouhou, dlouhou dobou. Skrze myšlenky, slova nebo činy někoho jiného se to pak vrátí zpět k nám právě v příhodné chvíli a způsobí to příznivý obrat v našem životě. Proto musíme věnovat pozornost všem svým myšlenkám, slovům a skutkům. Kdykoliv se v naší hlavě zrodí zlá myšlenka, měli bychom okamžitě zjistit, odkud přišla. Musíme jí zabránit, aby se stala naší realitou tím, že odmítneme na ní dál myslet. Nikdy nesmíme dopustit, aby napřátelské pocity zabarvily naše myšlenky o někom, protože všechny tyto myšlenky a pocity se k nám vrátí! To samé platí o našem těle a mysli. Musíme se vyvarovat myšlenkám na nemoce, neboť tyto myšlenky oslabují naši obranyschopnost a připravují cestu nemoci. Stejně tak nesmíme nikdy mluvit o nemocech a ukazovat přitom na své vlastní tělo, když vysvětlujeme, že tady a támhle měl kamarád bolest, nádor nebo něco operované. A stejně tak nesmíme ukazovat sami na sebe, když mluvíme například o tom, že někdo přišel o nohu během nehody. Pokud tak činíme, dáváme energii možnostem nemocí nebo nehod a tak nevědomě přivoláváme různé druhy neštěstí, které vědomě nechceme. Proto musíme mluvit o zdraví, síle a štěstí a naplnit tak vzduch kolem nás radostí a tím učinit náš osud plným radosti! Ale co dělají lidé? Do nekonečna mluví o katastrofách. Bez ustání si stěžují, naříkají a kňourají místo toho, aby něco udělali a zahnali tak to zlé, které jim dělá starosti. Tímto způsobem totiž jenom dosáhnou toho, že naplní atmosféru kolem sebe negativními silami. Nevyhnutelně pak tyto síly udeří dříve nebo později zpátky, což záleží na velikosti a celkové síle negativních energií, které daný jedinec uvedl do pohybu. Primitivní člověk, který stojí na nízké úrovni vývoje, je izolovaný a zapuštěný do hmoty. Proto síly, které uvolní, působí pomalu a těžkopádně. Čím je člověk výše na žebříčku vývoje, tím silnější a pronikavější jsou energie, které vysílá, a tím rychlejší jsou reakce na to, co dělá. Jak často slyšíme lidi, jak si stěžují: „Opravdu mám smůlu. Normálně vůbec nelžu, ale kdykoliv řeknu i sebemenší lež, abych se vymanil z trapné situace, okamžitě se to provalí. Ale podívej na tohodle XY, který neustále lže, jak když tiskne, a vždycky mu to projde!“ Pokud patříte do této skupiny a někdy jste si stěžovali tímhle způsobem, můžete si blahopřát a radovat se, neboť fenomén, na který si stěžujete, je důkaz toho, že vysíláte vysoké a mocné síly, které oběhnou svou dráhu a vrátí se zpět bleskovou rychlostí. Buďte ujištěni, že ti ostatní, kteří zdánlivě beztrestně páchají zlo, jsou také dřív nebo později negativními energiemi, které vyslali, dostiženi, a v té chvíli je pro ně tato rána o to víc nepříjemnější. Jen sledujte lidi kolem sebe a uvidíte, že to tak je. Většinou ovšem lidé zůstávají slepí. Ačkoliv je zákon karmy jasný jako facka, lidé stále mluví o „náhodě“! Ale co je náhoda? Latinské slovo pro náhodu koincidence („co“ – „in“ – „cadere“) a znamená „spadnout na“. Náhoda tedy znamená něco, co nám nečekaně a nepředvídatelně spadne do života. Ale jenom proto, že jsme nevěděli, že tato událost se blíží, můžeme předpokládat, že neměla příčinu? Nemají všechny ty události, které způsobily to, co se stalo, příčinu? Může se opravdu něco „jen tak stát“ bez příčiny? Činy všech těch nespočetných bytostí na světě a jejich následky jsou spolu neodlučitelně spjaté a zapadají do sebe jako kolečka v hodinkách. A tak vznikají společné osudy rodin, skupin lidí, národů a dokonce celých kontinentů. Ale stejně jako každá buňka v těle má i každá lidská bytost svůj vlastní individuální osud v rámci společného osudu své rodiny, národa či kontinentu. Často jsme mohli během 2. světové války vidět, jak je osud jednotlivce provázán s osudem rodiny, domu nebo města a přesto mnoho lidí prošlo velkými katastrofami jako zázrakem bez újmy. Jaká síla zde působí, co koná takové zázraky? Je to celkový součet všech našich předchozích činů, čistý výsledek všech sil, které jsme kdy uvedli do pohybu. Nic a nikdo nemůže ujít těmto silám. Kulka ve chvíli, kdy byla vystřelena, může být jemně vychýlena ze své smrtící dráhy, možná jen tím, že tyto síly způsobí malý reflex v ruce, paži nebo prstu osoby, která stiskla spoušť – možná jen nepatrné neviditelné zachvění svalů – a kulka, která byla určená nám, proletí neškodně kolem. Člověk může být pouze tehdy zabit, pokud to tak má ve svém osudu. Cesty vraha a jeho oběti se nevyhnutelně střetnou. Oba jsou k sobě neodolatelně a nevyhnutelně přitahováni až do chvíle, kdy jsou síly, jež do té doby spaly v útrobách osudu, vypuštěny. Pak dojde k vraždě. Stejným způsobem se setkávají cesty zachránce a jeho zachráněného. Nic se neděje náhodou; všechno je dokonalý výsledek přecházejících činů. Nikdy na to nezapomínejme. Při všem, co děláme, mějme vždy na paměti, že to, co uděláme, se nám vrátí. A udělejme to pouze tehdy, pokud opravdu cítíme, že chceme, aby tu samou věc někdo udělal nám. „Čiň ostatním tak, jak bys chtěl, aby oni činili tobě“ je způsob, jakým Ježíš vyjádřil tuto zásadu. Ať už tomu říkáme „zlaté pravidlo“ nebo „karma“, jednoduše to znamená, že cokoliv uděláme ostatním, se k nám vrátí. Pokud máme oči otevřené a díváme se kolem sebe na cestě životem, znovu a znovu máme šanci zpozorovat, jak osud poslušně následuje hlavní vlanosti určitého člověka. Je to obzvláště evidentní v případech, kdy osud postihne dva či více lidí. Jeden z nich může být na dně a zničený, zatímco druhého to ani nevybočilo z rovnováhy. Ačkoliv možná přišel o to samé co první, pohotově se sebere; a během krátké doby už stojí rovně na nohou a je schopný pomáhat ostatním. Toto je příklad toho, co dělají pozitivní lidé. Očekávají pomoc pouze ze vnitř sebe samých, nikoliv zvenčí, věří v sebe sama, pevně drží otěže ve svých rukou, seberou všechnu svou sílu a dál bojují, dokud jim osud nesloží do klína plody semen, která zaseli.
